Andy Mister

Andy Mister is an artist and writer. His work investigates the boundary between mechanical and manual reproduction, how meaning is created or lost through copying. He appropriates images from a variety of sources, removing their specific historical context. Of the arrangement of his images, Mister says, “it's something like my bedroom as a teenager, filled with images clipped from magazines: bands or writers that I admired interspersed with random images I found aesthetically interesting. I am interested in the relationship between images and connections that the viewer creates when encountering them, connections that I cannot control.”

Mister has recently been exhibited at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Kathleen Cullen Fine Arts, Brian Morris Gallery, Dieu Donné, SPRING/BREAK, Lesley Heller Workspace, and City Without Walls. The Cultural Society published Heroes & Villains, a book of his drawings, in the fall of 2014. His first full-length book, Liner Notes, was published in 2013 by Station Hill. His writing has appeared in Boston Review, Colorado Review, Fence, Northwest Review, Verse, and elsewhere. He has been awarded residencies from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and the Bemis Center.
