Amy Elkins

Photographer Amy Elkins handles themes of gender stereotypes, masculine identity, athleticism, and vulnerability, primarily through traditional portraiture. Conscientious of current political and social issues, she spotlights individuals living in trying conditions, such as the communities of post-Katrina New Orleans or the inmates on death row. Despite the various life experiences of her subjects, Elkins nevertheless draws parallels in her pared-down portraits, which deliver profound insight into the human psyche.

Born in 1979 in Venice Beach, California, Elkins earned her BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her work has been exhibited at festivals and in galleries throughout the world. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
