Alex Olson

Alex Olson’s work investigates the legibility of a surface while concentrating on how a surface can act as a screen (both in the sense of projection and barrier) for an interior. These works take their cues from interior design and domestic spaces as well as surrealist strategies of accessing internal states, such as through automatic drawing. Enlisting blunt brushwork and thick impasto in contrast with more graphic exposures of marks and textures, Olson creates proposals for surface scenarios that undermine initial reads and encourage reconsideration.

Olson’s recent exhibitions include a solo show Bravo Zebra at Laura Bartlett Gallery, London, as well as group exhibitions Murmurs: Recent Contemporary Acquisitions, curated by Rita Gonzalez, LACMA, Los Angeles, The Stand In (Or a Glass of Milk), curated by Alexandra Gaty and Lauren Mackler, Public Fiction, Los Angeles and Painter Painter, curated by Eric Crosby and Bartholomew Ryan, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN.
