Alessandra Sanguinetti

Living in Argentina until the age of 30, photographer Alessandra Sanguinetti began taking photographs of farmers and their animals in the sprawling grassland plains that cover much of the country. The artist is perhaps best known for her series, The Adventures of Guile and Belinda, which follows a pair of cousins through their shared moments of expectation, fear, and anticipation as they transition, physically and psychologically, from girlhood to motherhood. Sanguinetti has said that taking pictures, for her, is a way of connecting the dots, finding links and patterns between what seems like arbitrary chaos, “and after finding a pattern we can recognize, it makes it easier to get through the day.”

Though Sanguinetti was born in New York in 1968, she grew up in Argentina where she lived from 1970 until 2003. Sanguinetti is a member of Magnum photo agency and is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the Robert Gardner Fellowship in Photography, National Geographic Magazine Grant, MacDowell Fellowship, Discovery Award from Rencontres D’Arles in France, Hasselblad Foundation Grant in Sweden, National Fund for the Arts Grant in Argentina, Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in New York among others. Selected solo exhibitions include Boston Art Institute, The Italian Academy at Columbia University, Museum of Modern Art in Argentina, Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas in Buenos Aires, and Museo Historico de Quilmes in Buenos Aires. Her work has also been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, Museum of Modern Art in New York, International Center for Photography in New York, Spanish Cultural Center of Buenos Aires, Museum of Modern art in Buenos Aires, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires.
