Alan Cote
Alan Cote is an abstract painter who works with large two-panel paintings. The overall dimensions of the paintings vary but the two panels are always the same dimension. A consistent feature in his work is the repeated bar-like shape, which Cote refers to as an element between a line and a shape. Though they are initially precisely drawn, these shapes are then painted freehand, which demonstrates that the work is not meant to be perfect. His primary interest is in color and the emotions it conveys. However, the different types of balance in relation to the elements, their size, and symmetry is also an important part of his work.
Cote has had numerous solo exhibitions including at Reese Palley in New York, Galerie Ricke in Cologne, Germany, Cunningham Ward, Inc. in New York, Jared Sable Gallery in Toronto, Canada, Betty Cunningham in New York, Oxley Gallery in Sydney, Australia, Washburn Gallery in New York, Damon Brandt, in New York, Tyler Gallery, Temple University Philadelphia and Tyler School of Art, Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and Fort Gansevoort Gallery in New York.
