Aaron Gilbert

Aaron Gilbert employs art-historical and psychological narratives in his atmospheric and often symbolically ambiguous paintings. He is influenced by the devotional paintings of the early Renaissance as well as Mexican retables and Byzantine icons. Human interactions, sometimes violent and other times intimate, figure prominently. In discussing his work with Mary Jones for BOMBlog, Gilbert says, “I try to have brutality and tenderness exist simultaneously. I think if there’s a complete absence of either then it’s untrue.”

Gilbert has shown his work at the Brooklyn Museum, Deitch Studios in New York, and NURTUREart in Brooklyn, among others.
