Shine Shivan is a trader of identities. Through his sculptural and performative works he attempts to excavate and redefine the psychological constructs, experiences, and roles attached to masculinity. Shivan's sculptural works use natural as well as architectural forms.
In Shivan's work, found biological elements and sacred materials are painstakingly assembled to create works that have a psychological and physiological presence and that display delicate visual complexity. His video, photographic, and performance works serve to depict an aggressively male, yet often gender-bending and homoerotic identity. It is one, which operates in the slippages between stereotype and abnormality.
Shivan debuted with a solo show, Sperm Weaver, at Gallery Maskara, Mumbai, India in 2009. His video work was shown at Move on Asia 2010 at Tate Modern in London, and in November 2010 his work was part of an exhibition at MOCA Taipei in Taiwan. Shine Shivan was one of the artists shortlisted for the SKODA Prize Twenty 2010. In 2011, Shivan's work was part of a group exhibitions at India Art Summit 2011, Crossroads: India Escalate at Prague Biennale 5 and (M)other India at Galerie du Jour–Agnès B, Paris, France.
