Sandra Gamarra

Sandra Gamarra’s painting, sculpture, and video works question the worth of replicas and the glorification of authenticity. She is most well known for initiating the Lima Museum of Contemporary Art in 2002, a fictional museum in her hometown that consisted of the artist’s hand-painted replicas of artworks by other contemporary artists. Contemplation of art is considered a holy rite for Gamarra, and she challenges the viewer’s trust in the art-viewing environment. She prompts the viewer to direct their attention to the ways in which they might define “art” and “appropriation.”

Through her career Gamarra has exhibited at the Bass Museum of Art, Miami, MAR – Museo de Arte do Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Tate Modern, London, MMOMA, Moscow, Kunstlerhaus Wien, Vienna, Museu de arte Moderna de São Paulo- MAM, São Paulo, La Casa Encendida, Madrid, and Museo de la Nacion, Lima, among many others. She participated in the Bienal de Cuenca in 2011, Sao Paulo Bienial in 2010 and the Venice Biennale in 2009.
