Huang Gang

Huang Gang is a sculptor heavily influenced by the transitions and revolutions of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, manipulating traditional Chinese symbols for his own commentary on Westernization. His father was an art history professor in Beijing, providing him with a generous insight into traditional Chinese art and calligraphy. He became interested in Tibetan culture in the 1980s, fusing spiritual iconography with his consistent use of the color red, the sexualized female soldier, and classical female forms like Aphrodite. Gang’s conceptual work obscures the significance of ideological landmarks by playfully blurring the clarity of their intentions.

Gang has exhibited at institutions including Shanghai Art Museum, China, Poly Art Museum, Beijing, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Japan, and a number of international galleries. Gang has been honored with an award of Outstanding Contributions on China Art in 2010, and participated in the 2011 Venice Biennale.
