Gerald Laing

Gerald Laing was a seminal figure in British Pop Art, who created prints and paintings using images from mass media and advertising. Laing depicted women in bikinis, heroes, film stars, drag racers, skydivers, and astronauts. He is best known for his portrait of Brigitte Bardot, which depicts a close up of the actress' face with a graphic circle focusing on her features. Later in his career, he continued his fascination with female celebrities with a series of works depicting Amy Winehouse. Laing is also known for his sculptures, which includes busts of Luciano Pavarotti, Andy Warhol, and Paul Getty. His signature technique and graphic aesthetic was influenced by American Pop artists Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jim Rosenquist.

Gerald Laing’s work has been included in group and solo shows, including  Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, National Portrait Gallery, London, Tate Britain, London, Royal Academy of Arts, London, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Geneva, Aspen Art Museum, Colorado, Cincinnati Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and MoMA, New York.
