Anders Ruhwald
Anders Ruhwald pushes the boundaries of conceptual ceramic work to elucidate human’s relationship to objects and further to challenge these traditional notions through humour and inquisition. By exploring the transformative potential of an object in any given space and by understanding its most primary function he is then able to reference this dynamic within his own unconventional narrative. His pieces often satirize traditional household objects, complying with basic conventions of space and decoration while defying definite truths such as science and familial relations. He injects a genuine and familiar quality into his work as he draws insight from personal history and real human experience. In addition to an object's correlation with space, Ruhwald is inspired by the structures within music and the methods of production. He extracts the undertones and attitudes of various genres and applies those structures to his own work.
Recently Ruhwald has displayed his work in solo exhibitions at MOCA Cleveland, Volume Gallery in Chicago, Galleri Format in Oslo, Norway, Urbanglass in Brooklyn, and The Clay Studio in Philadelphia. He also frequently shares work in group shows at galleries including Moran Bondaroff in Detroit, Galleria Salvatore Lanteri in Milan, Denver Art Museum in Colorado, and Miyako Yoshinaga …
