Angela Bulloch

One of the so-called YBAs (Young British Artists), who rose to fame in the UK during the late 1980s and ’90s, Angela Bulloch takes a keen interest in color, sound, and the way that stimuli shape and structure our social interactions. Bulloch therefore uses newly available technological devices and materials to not only reconfigure space, but to also alter our experience and awareness of it. Her early Drawing Machines, for example, are automated devices that start or stop drawing lines across gallery walls in response to actions of gallery visitors, the sound of their footsteps or the movement of their bodies, for instance.

Bulloch is the recipient of a Whitechapel Artists Award and the 2011 Vattenfall Contemporary Art Prize. Her work has been shown at the Rotterdam Center for Contemporary Art, The Museo dell’ Ara Pacis in Rome, and the RISD Museum at the Rhode Island School of Design. Bulloch has received project commissions from Cambridge University and the Centre Pompidou, among other institutions.
