Sean Scully

Irish-born American painter Sean Scully creates textured architectural compositions of stripes and fields of color. Typically working on a large scale, Scully’s paintings often comprise multiple irregularly sized panels, which he layers and attaches to one another. Throughout his career, Scully has remained resolute in his commitment to exploring Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Over time, he has focused in turn on the exploration of different color palettes. These palettes correspond to different groups of paintings and also different stages of Scully’s career. As the artist has stated, "I hold a very Romantic ideal of what's possible in art, and I hold to the idea of the 'personal universal.'"

Scully is a two-time Turner Prize nominee. He has had solo exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Kunstmuseum Bern, and the Fundacio Joan Miro. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Pompidou.
