Paul Pfeiffer

Paul Pfeiffer's work in film and photography employs recent computer technologies to explore the effect of mass media on human consciousness. Reflecting the ancient tradition of Hellenistic Greece, where appreciation for beauty was considered parallel to athletic achievement, Pfeiffer's work focuses on capturing the intriguing convergence of art and sports. Appropriating footage from public events—basketball games, the fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, Michael Jackson explaining the allegations of child abuse—Pfeiffer digitally manipulates it to challenge the way that society passively absorbs information. Pfeiffer is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships—most notably the inaugural Bucksbaum Award, the world's largest award given to an individual artist, presented by the Whitney Museum of American Art.
