Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, New York's art districts are in shambles-waterlogged disaster areas where untold artworks were destroyed by flooding at galleries (Chelsea was particularly hard hit) and elsewhere, archives were ravaged, and tent-pole events were postponed (like Performa's annual gala) or cancelled altogether. But that doesn't mean the art world has ground to a halt altogether, with a plethora of events continuing apace outside the city. Take a look at this programming going on this week-and best of luck to everyone in New York.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST -
Opening reception for Eric Zener at Hespe Gallery, 251 Post Street, Suite 420, San Francisco, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (through December 1st)
On view at the the gallery are a number of photorealistic oil paintings of people diving and swimming underwater. Based on black-and-white and color images, Zener's paintings deftly imitate the visual distortions caused by the water's undulations.
Opening reception for "Steve Fitch: Western Landmarks & Diesels and Dinosaurs" at Robert Koch Gallery, 49 Geary Street, Suite 550, San Francisco, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (through December 22nd)
This exhibition will feature work by photographer Steve Fitch, who is best known for his depictions of the American West, and will include selections from his renowned series Diesels & Dinosaurs as well as color photographs from the '80s and '90s.
Opening reception for "Jasper Johns: Numbers, 0-9, and 5 Postcards" at Matthew Marks Gallery, 1062 North Orange Grove, Los Angeles, 6-8 p.m. (through January 5, 2013)
The blue-chip gallery's Los Angeles outpost will be presenting 13 sculptures, five paintings, and five works on paper by the great American artist, all of which were completed over the past two years. Among them will be Numbers, the single largest bronze sculpture Johns has made to date.

Opening reception for "What Was I Thinking: 25th Year Anniversary" at Catherine Edelman Gallery, 300 West Superior Street, Chicago, 5-8 p.m. (through December 29th)
The Catherine Edelman Gallery will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary in December 2012 and in honor of the occasion will be showcasing work by photographers the gallery has exhibited over the years including pieces by Daniel Beltrá, Michael Kenna, Julie Blackmon, and Sally Mann.

Opening reception for "Jessica Eaton: Polytopes" at M+B Gallery, 612 North Almont Drive, Los Angeles, 6-8 p.m. (through December 22nd)
In her first solo exhibition at the gallery, photographer Jessica Eaton will display her gorgeously colorful works created "in camera" through a variety of exposures, filters, and analog photographic techniques.
Opening reception for "James Sterling Pitt: On a Clear Day We Were Lightning" at Eli Ridgway Gallery, 172 Minna Street, San Francisco, 4-7 p.m. (through December 8th)
Conceived as an object-based journal, James Sterling Pitt's recent work consists of drawings and sculptures that attempt to capture the brief neuronal flashes that accompany visual experiences.
