There's no rest for the weary in the art world this week. For the globe-trotting art jet set, Paris's FIAC art fair is the go-to destination for contemporary art; for those who haven't had a chance to make this year's European art destinations, this week is your chance to catch up on the much-praised dOCUMENTA art exhibition as the director comes to New York for a pair of speaking appearances.

Upper East Side gallery Tibor de Nagy will be hosting simultaneous openings of new work by abstract painter Tom Burkhardt and still lifes by Susan Jane Welp.
"Aperture Remix" show with work by James Welling, Vik Muniz, Alec Soth, Viviane Sassen, Doug Rickard, Martin Parr, and others at the Aperture Foundation, 547 West 27 Street, 4th Floor, 6-8 p.m.
Curator Lesley Martin has gathered together some of the most interesting figures in contemporary photography to pay homage to the history of Aperture, referencing works from the organization's archives.

The Frost Art Museum and Florida International University's sculpture park will welcome the addition of ten outdoor sculptures in a variety of materials from artists including John Henry, Dennis Oppenheim, and Verina Baxter.

Artist and filmmaker Jayson Musson (aka Hennesy Youngman) will discuss his recent "paintings" made from cut-up Coogi sweaters, as well as his renowned satirical video series "Art Thoughtz."

Recent dOCUMENTA director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev will talk about the 100 "notebooks" that were generated to accompany this year's edition of the quinquennial mega-exhibition held in Kassel, Germany, with remarks from the artist Lawrence Weiner and others.

As part of the "Readings in Contemporary Poetry" series pairing two poets from different generations, artist and poet Jim Dine will present original work with poet Karen Weiser.

In his third solo exhibition with the gallery, artist Hank Willis Thomas will present photographs, sculptures, paintings, and new media works drawn from Roland Barthes's Mythologies, exploring the implicit and explicit representations found in popular culture.

Running in concurrence with his inaugural exhibition "Inside Out and From the Ground Up" at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, artist William Villalongo presents a series of paintings that reflect on the nature of human origins as filtered through histories and mythologies both personal and universal.

In addition to showing recent paintings, prints, and tapestries, this exhibition will also be the first presentation of Close's watercolor prints, his latest experimentation with digital technology, as well as never-before-seen oil portraits of artists and friends, including Cindy Sherman, Paul Simon, Kara Walker, and Philip Glass.

Texas Contemporary Art Fair Preview and Opening Night Party at George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida De Las Americas, Houston, TX, 6-9:30 p.m.
Showcasing contemporary work from 65 galleries, the Texas Contemporary Art Fair features some of the most groundbreaking and progressive artists from around the world. Regular fair hours will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 19th and 20th, and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 21st.
Opening of International Contemporary Art Fair (FIAC) at Grand Palais, Avenue Winston Churchill, Paris, 12-8 p.m.
Following the winding down of the Frieze fair in London, Paris will become the latest cultural hub for the art world as over 180 exhibitors gather in the city for France's biggest contemporary art event. In addition to the goings on at the main fair over the weekend, special outdoor projects will be taking place in the adjacent Tuileries gardens, multiple galleries will be inaugurating new spaces, and the Marcel Duchamp Prize will be awarded.
Opening reception for "Alex Israel: Thirty" at Galerie Almine Reich, 19 rue Saintonge, Paris, France (through November 17th)
Named in referenced to the artist's 30th birthday which occurs just days before the opening, the exhibition presents a floor-to-ceiling mural of the sky at sunset in Los Angeles painted on the gallery walls. Also featured are four new sculptures from the artist's series Property.
Opening reception for "Loris Gréaud: The Unplayed Notes" at Galerie Yvon Lambert, 108 rue Vielle du Temple, Paris, France (through December 5th)
The artist's first show at the gallery in his six years with Yvon Lambert, it will feature works created specifically for this exhibition, ranging from site-specific sculpted glass to video work made in collaboration with Brown University-each a result of experiments in alchemical science.

In this exhibition of new media work, stacked, gray slabs that line the gallery walls are juxtaposed with a series of sculptural objects presenting repetitive acts on tabletops throughout the space.

In this new show, Baldessari presents art historical motifs from past centuries joined together with his own color overlays, creating positions for new, imaginative associations.

Last day for "Elad Lassry: Untitled (Presence)" at The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Accompanied by a much-talked-about performance series that concluded last month, Lassry presents an exhibition that attempts to reconfigure the audience's perceptions of physical space by using strategically placed walls with apertures within the gallery.

Chronicling the rich legacy of the African American arts community in Los Angeles and the increasing political and social influence of African Americans across the country, the exhibition will feature over 125 works by 32 artists who were active during these historical decades.

Opening reception for "Wayne Thiebaud: A Retrospective" at Acquavella Gallery, 18 East 79th Street, 6-8 p.m. (through November 30)
Featuring works spanning the artist's lengthy career from the mid-1950s to today, the retrospective will include paintings and works on papers covering all of Thiebaud's major subjects, from cityscapes and portraits to confections and California panoramas.
Opening reception for "Rosemarie Trockel: A Cosmos" at the New Museum, 235 Bowery, 8 p.m. (through January 20th, 2013)
In this exhibition combining a range of connections and references from the natural sciences, philosophy, and art history, Trockel's greatly admired "knit paintings" and new ceramic work will be placed beside the work of other artists whom Trockel regards as kindred spirits.
