The fall art season rolls in next week with a bevy of openings, retrospectives, and innovative projects from New York to London to Miami. Here, an international guide to the museums and institutions with September shows you don't want to miss.
"Beyond LOVE" at the Whitney Museum, Opens Sept. 26
Robert Indiana will have quite the season this fall: the veteran artist, often linked with the Pop Art movement, is the subject of this Whitney retrospective, titled after his iconic LOVE image that first appeared over 50 years ago, in 1966. Down on the Lower East Side, Woodward Gallery will join the festivities with Robert Indiana: A to Z on September 7, showing a series of new, boldly graphic work. At age 84, this artist still breaking into revelatory new terrain.
"James Welling: Monograph" at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Opens Sept. 29
The 35-year-long career of this genre-defying artist gets the full treatment in a solo show this fall. Welling’s photographs combine elements of painting and sculpture to create compositions not limited by the traditional means of the camera. Originally organized by the Cincinnati Art Museum, the show has special significance in its new iteration in Los Angeles, where the artist lives and works.
“Music” at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Opens Sept. 22
Sound art will surely be a talking point this fall, as the Aldrich mounts a semester-long series of exhibitions and events on the connections between music and visual art. This coincides with MoMA’s major sound art exhibition that opened last month, as well as the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s sound installation by Janet Cardiff at the Cloisters, Forty Part Motet.
"Love of Technology" at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Opens Sept. 27
Alex Gartenfeld, currently the museum's interim director, is curating a show that examines how users interact with technology through the prism of minimal and conceptual art by over a dozen established and up-and-coming artists. The show includes work from the 1970s to today, by artists such as Andrea Zittel, Josh Smith, Ian Cheng, and Anicka Yi.
"MCA DNA: Warhol and Marisol" at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Opens Sept. 21
This new show features selections of work from the museum's collection by famed artist friends Andy Warhol and Marisol. Not only were the two often seen together everywhere on the New York art scene, they often made each other the subjects of their art. Accordingly, their work will appear side by side during the show's nine-month run.
"City of Disappearances" at CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Opens Sept. 10
In this show dedicated to the ever-shifting nature of cities, San Francisco and London serve as jumping-off points for 10 diverse artists. Named after Iain Sinclair's book about London, the show will be renamed Infinite City for Rebecca Solnit's book on San Francisco when it travels to London next year. Slater Bradley, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and Michel Auder are among the artists in the exhibition.
"A Journey Through London Subculture: 1980s to Now" at the ICA London (Offsite), Opens Sept. 13
The ICA takes over the ground floor of the Old Selfridges Hotel to explore all things underground in the London art scene since the 1980s. The installations, images, vitrines, and video works will look at how London's avant-garde evolved in the realms of design, fashion, and art, from Alexander McQueen to Gilbert and George.
